Turtles

We are lucky to have 5 of the 7 sea turtle species to reside in our waters. It is common for us to see the Loggerhead (Caretta caretta), Green (Chelonia mydas), and Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and sometimes even the amazing Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)! Both loggerheads and leatherbacks use our beach as a nesting area (Nov-March), however the number of turtle nests has declined drastically due to poaching. Sadly, all species found in this region are either endangered or critically endangered.

We are using sightings and photo ID data to assess the sea turtle populations in Závora. We aim to highlight key areas where individuals like to spend most of their time. This information will be used to help protect these species and their critical habitats.

We are also participating in nightly turtle patrols during nesting season to locate nesting events and prevent egg poaching.
